Galvanic Hair Removal: A Traditional Approach to Permanent Epilation
Galvanic hair removal, named after the pioneering scientist Luigi Galvani, utilises the body's electrolytic properties to achieve permanent hair removal. This technique, first documented in 1875 by ophthalmologist Charles Michel for the treatment of ingrown eyelashes, remains a valuable method for targeting specific areas of hair growth.
How Galvanic Hair Removal Works:
1. Technique: Galvanic electrolysis is a slow but precise process, best suited for small areas such as facial hair or the bikini line. It is not recommended for larger areas like the back or legs due to its time-consuming nature.
2. Process: Using a thin metal probe, a direct current (DC) is applied to the hair follicle. This current interacts with the salt and water in the follicle, chemically transforming it into lye (sodium hydroxide). Lye is a caustic substance that effectively destroys the dermal papilla—the structure responsible for hair growth—by disrupting its blood supply.
3. Treatment: During the procedure, clients typically experience no discomfort as the direct current is gentle. The chemical reaction induced by the galvanic current targets the hair production cells at the follicle's base, leading to their permanent destruction. However, multiple sessions may be required to achieve complete hair removal, depending on factors such as hair growth cycles, medical conditions, and previous hair removal treatments.
